ELLIS LEVEMBER · MY COMRADES JOURNEY
Six consecutive finishes in 2014–2019. A return in 2026.
At 54, my third-fastest Comrades finish.
May 2025–May 2026, alongside kettlebell training.

I once thought running wasn’t for me.
At school, an early experience with running left me thinking it wasn’t for me. In my early forties, I discovered that I could run marathons and ultramarathons. I went on to complete six consecutive Comrades Marathons, finishing that chapter in 2019.
Kettlebell training was already part of my life. Between 2015 and 2019, I helped more than 250 people train for free. I loved seeing people grow stronger and discover what they could do.
Then I gradually stepped away from running and strength training. During the Covid years, that routine fell away. There were occasional runs afterwards, but the consistency was missing.
I returned to kettlebell training and developed the programme that became TF360. Through consistent sessions and progressive loading, I began building my strength again.
My training routine was four TF360 kettlebell sessions a week, Monday to Thursday, with my weekly run on Saturdays. That rhythm gave my preparation a clear structure: consistent strength training through the week, followed by my Saturday run.
From May 2025 to May 2026, I logged 883 kilometres of running. Alongside my previous running experience, this strength-and-running routine formed the foundation of my return to Comrades.
At 54, I returned to Comrades with the excitement of a beginner and the experience of six previous finishes.
The hills were demanding. I ran the manageable climbs and walked the steeper ones, aiming to reach 70 kilometres with something left in my legs. My fuelling worked well, and when I reached that point, I still felt good. Even the downhills felt manageable.
Afterwards, I was stiff, but I could walk reasonably comfortably and had no muscle injuries to report. I was proud of how I had managed the race.
10:55:55. My seventh finish.
Seven down, three to go towards my Green Number.
It was my third-fastest Comrades, just 1 minute 31 seconds slower than my 2016 finish. My personal best remains 10:32:33, set in 2015.
Those 883 kilometres are part of my personal story, alongside years of running experience, kettlebell training, pacing and fuelling. They are not a training target for someone else.
That journey shapes how I coach TF360: start where you are, learn to move well, build progressively and keep showing up.
